Autumn leaves are valuable. . .

This morning we had an amazing turnout for our monthly Local Business Roundtable breakfast networking meeting. Over 40 people came together to network and hear a excellent presentation by Dawn Follendorf of Main Street Wausau. This meeting fills a gap that other networking groups don’t provide, so thank you to everyone that took a part in this event. Be sure to save the date for next month: Thursday, November 21.

Where do those leaves go that the City of Wausau picks up every fall? Not to the landfill, thats for sure. Hsu Growing Supply accepts the leaves from the city and turns them into rich leaf compost that used in many of their products. Leaf collection starts this coming Monday, so get ready to rake and deposit your leaves by the curb. Residents outside of Wausau can do their part too, Hsu Growing supply will take your leaves and turn them into compost. Contact Hsu Growing Supply for details and hours. . .
So what is the benefit of leaf compost? As part of a nationwide project, The Neighbor’s Place, Hsu Growing Supply and the United States Composting Council have joined hands to benefit the food pantry at The Neighbor’s Place. With a donation of leaf compost by Hsu Growing Supply and helping hands from our local community, The Neighbors Place has grown over 2700 lbs of produce (and still counting) to be given to their food pantry. “Compost has huge benefits for people growing local and sustainable food, and compost itself is a local and sustainable product as well,” said Michael Virga, Executive Director, USCC. “We all can use compost in our gardens to improve the quality of our soil and have a more bountiful harvest.
Did you know that by adding compost to your gardens you can reduce the need for chemical fertilizers?  Compost also allows the soil to hold more water, which means plants need less water, and gardeners can spend less time caring for their plants.

Advanced Social Media

Today’s Facebook Tip: Contests and promotions are a great way to increase engagement and fans to your business page. Facebook used to have some very specific rules that contests could only be conducted through a third party app. They have since loosened that restriction. Still, third party apps may be the best way to capture user data for targeted marketing. Do you want to learn more about using Facebook for promotions and contests? Attending my Advanced Social Media Class on Wednesday, October 30th will give you the answers.
Registration is through the UWMC Department of Continuing Education. Cost $20. Registration is at UWMC Department of Continuing Education.
