This weekend is not the time to head off to the cabin up North. Take my word, you’ll want to stay in town. The weekend after the Independence Day festivities has become Wausau’s busiest weekend ever.
This year the magic weekend falls on July 11-14, 2013. During this four day period you’ll find so many things to do, you’ll wonder how you’ll accomplish it all. But relax, as our handy guide will highlight a few of the must see events going on in the Wausau area.
It all starts out Thursday morning on the 400 block with the weekly Marketplace Thursdays. The event runs all summer, starting at about 9:00am with a farmers market, art and craft items and food. As the day ramps up, you’ll find more food vendors (including the daily CJ’s Catering Grab and Go truck). Many of the Thursdays include entertainment at noon and 6pm including the Frisbee Dogs on July 18th. Full entertainment schedule can be found on the Wausau Events site.
The Wausau Events Balloon Rally and Glow runs all weekend starting on Thursday the 11th at 5:00pm. See balloon glows and liftoffs (weather permitting) Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 5pm and Saturday and Sunday mornings at 6am. Come see the early morning liftoff and have breakfast at the Kiwanis pancake feed tent. BBQ vendors will also have ribs and other slow cooked delights on site all weekend long and live bands will play Thursday-Saturday. Don’t forget to look up on Saturday after dusk for the fireworks show. Free admission to the event grounds located at the Wausau Municipal Airport.
Let your artistic spirit go wild at Wausau’s annual Chalkfest July 13-14th. Now in it’s 10th year, amateur and professional artists get a box of chalk and a sidewalk square to decorate as the 400 block is transformed into a massive gallery. Can’t decide between the chalk fest and the balloon rally? Don’t worry, a free shuttle runs every 20 minutes between the downtown area and the airport.
Take a break and head down to the Wausau Whitewater Park to take in the ACA Open Canoe Slalom Nationals and North American Championships. The park is located about two blocks south of the 400 block, so it’s an easy walk down to see the action. Starting on July 12 and running through the weekend, you’ll see lots of canoe action from the competitors and enthusiasts as they enjoy a recreational water release. Wausau Whitewater has the full details.
Tired and sunburnt, wouldn’t it be nice to head inside and catch a play? The River District Theatre’s house show Lovers and Patriots, a play about the lives and relationships of John and Abigail Adams will be performing at the Wausau YWCA. Catch the shows Friday and Saturday July 12-13 at 7:30pm and Sunday at 3:00pm. Don’t worry if you miss it this weekend, as the show will also be back at the YWCA on July 19 and 21. Ticket information and more about this dynamic two person show can be found at the River District Theatre site.
Also don’t forget about our local Farmers Markets: The Wausau Farmers Market is Saturday morning down on River Dr and the Weston Farmers Market can be found next to the Municipal Center on Schofield Ave. Also heading into the downtown area on Stewart Ave, don’t forget to stop at the new Gateway Farmers Market in the parking lot next to The Planted Seed on 2nd Ave and Stewart.
With so many things to do and see this weekend, I’m sure I’ve missed something. Do you have an event to add? Leave us a note in the comments below.
