Sneak Preview: Wausau Community Theatre’s A Chorus Line

Wausau Community Theatre A Chorus LineA Chorus Line, a production by the Wausau Community Theatre opens this Thursday at the Grand Theater. I had the opportunity to view a preview of the show as the cast performed their dress rehearsal. In this production; the acting, dancing, and music click; providing an memorable show worth seeing.

Chorus Line WausauA Chorus Line conceived and choreographed by Michael Bennett and featuring the music of Marvin Hamlisch hit the broadway stage in the summer of 1975. The musical was shaped through recordings of actors and dancers during several workshops while they recounted their experiences auditioning for work. The musical won 12 Tony awards, a Pulitzer Prize in 1976, and had the longest run on Broadway with 6137 performances, to be eclipsed by Cats in 1997. It’s still the 5th longest  running Broadway show in ever.

Chorus Line WausauThe musical is centered around 19 principal performers as they audition for a spot on a chorus line of nameless show. Zach, the director takes an unconventional approach to cull the heard by asking the individuals their life’s story, dreams, and aspirations. In the resulting monologues and conversations we hear the full range of emotion: confidence, fear, anger, sadness. All of the characters are sure of themselves as dancers, but don’t quite know how to express their feelings and life’s story to the director.

The Wausau Community Theatre’s production of A Chorus Line stays true to the roots of the original. The set design is minimal and lighting complements the performers and their breakout numbers. Directed by Wausau Community Theatre veteran Larry Kirchgaessner, the show also features choreography by Deb Clarke and music direction by Donna Petree.

Chorus Line WausauAn easy analysis of A Chorus Line would be to say this about young dancers making their break onto Broadway. But in reality it’s about veteran performers trying to catch one more dream on their way back down. The energy and vigor of the new kids is contrasted by the experiences of older audition members. Watch for that subtle juxtaposition in the performance.

In the end, only 4 boys and 4 girls can be picked for the chorus line. Who will make the cut and who will weep outside the theater’s stage door. Head on down to the Wausau Community Theatre’s production of A Chorus Line to find out.
