The Everyone Has a Place campaign is a grassroots effort to save the public transportation service for Weston, Schofield, Rothschild and the surrounding community. The campaign is soliciting donations from the community to help save the bus line that runs a loop from downtown Wausau into Weston and back. Approximately 97 riders per day rely on this bus for their transportation needs.
According to the Wausau Daily Herald article:
Transit officials already approved eliminating the bus lines serving Weston, Schofield and Rothschild for 2012 but are willing to reconsider if the campaign is successful, he said.
Jean Abreu, a member of North central Area congregations Organized to Make an Impact, the interfaith organization leading the campaign, said the group members hope leaflets to residents of the Wausau area will spur donations. NAOMI leaders also plan to ask for help from community foundations, she said.
“We knew it was a pretty big thing to be asking the community to do,” Abreu said. “We felt a lot of support as we talked to people about the bus service. Hope springs eternal.”
The Everyone Has Place campaign organizers where able to successfully place the continuation of bus service as a referendum on the Village ballot next April. but since the Village has already cut the service from the budget, the bus will cease to run on January 2nd, 2012. If organizers can reach their $60,000 goal by December 20th, the privately raised funds will keep the bus running until at least the referendum date.
A Holiday Jazz concert fundraiser will be held on Saturday December 17, 2011 at the St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church. Featuring the Zopel Jazz Trio, the concert will run from 6:30pm – 9:30pm. Your $10 donation at the door gets you music, raffles, refreshments and lots of fun. You can also keep abreast of the status of fund drive on the Everyone Has a Place Facebook page.
Even if the group is unable to reach their financial goal by the 20th of December, the money raised will still towards supporting public transportation.
