Closing Thoughts
Local business is important, and the best way to build and grow our local business community is to network with other business owners and professionals. The monthly Local Business Roundtable gives you the opportunity to network and share your knowledge with others. Our next networking event will be on Thursday May 24, 2012 from 7:30am to 8:30am.
This month’s theme “Opening the Closed Door” is a continuation on last month’s topic. We had such great discussion in our last roundtable about sales call best practices, that we decided to extend the topic and create discussion on what we do to get our products or services in front of the people that need them the most.
Your experiences and input on this topic is greatly appreciated and you are invited to share what works with the rest of the group. Please join us at the Wausau Entrepreneurial and Education center for a light continental breakfast, networking, and education.
Please share this information and flyer with other small business owners you know and/or do business with. I encourage you to invite anyone you know who might have an interest and could benefit from this business to business program and networking opportunity.
Bring business cards, flyers, coupons, and other promotional materials to share. Breakfast (continental) is on us.

Bicycling in the Wausau Area? This subject always brings mixed emotions and criticisms from the cycling community and non-cyclists. Wausau may not be the easiest cities to get around in via bike. We’re located in a valley so hills become our nemesis. Plus the river bisects the city, and with only three bridges; cyclists and motorists have to share those busy thoroughfares to get to the other side of town.
I’ve been bicycling in the city for almost 20 years and progress has been and is still being made. We have a vibrant bicycle community that is working with City and County government. Bike routes are being marked again, new road construction projects include space for alternative transportation, and trails have been added along both sides of the river. The one thing that still needs to change is motorists attitudes towards bicyclists.
While I don’t get cursed at near as much as I used to while on the road, motorists need to understand that they must share the road with bicycles, give them adequate space, and watch for them when starting, stopping, and turning. Cyclists need to observe the rules of the road, stay to the right, signal their intentions, and be properly lit when riding at night. Motorists and cyclists can coexist if both sides follow the rules and watch out for each other.
This post wasn’t intended to turn into a screed, but instead alert you to some great cycling and pedestrian activities happening this week. The month of May is National Bicycle and Pedestrian awareness month, with the bulk of the activities centering around May 14-18 which is National Bike Week. The weather should be beautiful much of the week, so get on your bike and burn some calories instead of gas.

Aures needs your help; she is facing three other finalists and the Roundy’s Foundation is holding the voting on their Facebook Page until Monday May 14. Please go over there, vote and show your support for Kam’s recipe.
More about Kam Aures and her recipe can be found on today’s Wausau Daily Herald:

Early May brings the opening of the area’s farmers markets. Already the Weston Farmer’s Market has been open for a week and the Wausau Farmer’s Market will open on Saturday May 12. While fresh produce may be limited in the early season, you’ll still find some hot house vegetables and greens for sale.
More often the early season brings the starter plants for planting in your garden. The first Weston Farmer’s Market offered a variety of tomato and pepper plants for transplanting, canned salsa, BBQ sauce, honey, maple syrup, and cut flowers. As the season warms up we’ll see more and more fruits and vegetables in stock.
Farmers markets tend to be a social affair. Not only do you get to purchase locally produced food, but you have the opportunity to talk to the producers and learn about their produce. Plus you’ll never know which of your friends and neighbors you’ll meet at the market. We’ll see you at the next farmer’s market.
